It is a great feeling to have won the Silver in my first stint as captain : Amit Gulia
On captaincy

I have been playing for the national team since 2014 and it was my first opportunity to captain the team at the U-23 Championship. So, personally, it is a great feeling to have won the Silver in my first stint as captain.

Training ahead of the Ch’ship

Some of us trained with the senior team for a month in Bangalore in SAI after which we joined the team in Patiala where we didn’t have a lot of time. But credit to the team that we strategized in that little time and the boys stuck to what was planned. It was because of that we could achieve whatever we eventually did.

Importance of the win over China

From the camp itself, we had the belief that we can come back with a medal. But the first match was very important since it was against China. Winning against China raised our confidence a great deal. After that, we improved our performance step by step.

On the Semi-Final against Pak

Of course, everyone knows what the current situation is and what our history with Pakistan has been like. But for a sportsman, once on the ground every opponent is the same. We don’t think of the external factors and the effort is to control what’s in our hands at that point i.e our game. When on court, the idea is to play according to the strategy prepared by the coach and try to execute it to the best of our abilities.

Coach Chauhan’s Role

Well, Volleyball is a sport where the coach has a very important role to play. Be it player substitutions or motivating players during timeouts, the coach is heavily involved. Our coach did a great job on all fronts and it’s a result of that that we could come back with a Silver.

On Muthusamy, Prince and Shon

A lot depends on the setter in the team since he has to manipulate the entire match. He has to read the entire game carefully and feed the ball to the attackers. Muthusamy, from the beginning, was very important to the team. He fed all the attackers equally and kept raising his game as we moved ahead in the tournament. He really deserved the Best Setter award in the tournament. Same with Prince, he got us the crucial block points at the right time and helped us go into lead on many occasions with his blocks.
Shon is young and played an important role in the team’s success. Since both of us are attackers, we needed to have a good coordination and we did have achieve in having that. It would be great to see him get more chances in future. I’m sure he will do well whenever he gets the opportunity.

Importance of League

Playing in the league definitely had a lot of impact on our game. We dealt with the pressure situations better because of having dealt with similar situations in the league. Besides, we learnt a great deal about handling such situations from the foreign players who we played with. Earlier, at the highest level, we couldn’t give our best when under pressure. But the experience of playing in the league came handy for us this time around.

On the Senior Championships in Tehran

The stakes are higher than the U23 tournament. Our ranking hasn’t been very impressive at the Senior level, so the talk in the camp was to come back with a medal that can give a boost to our ranking. With the kind of team that we have, I’m sure everyone is going to give their 100% and we will come back with a medal.
