India kick-off campaign against China in Asian Men’s U-23 Volleyball Ch’ship
The Indian team will start their campaign at the Asian Men’s U23 Volleyball Championship today. The team, led by Haryana’s Amit Gulia, will be up against China in the last match of the opening day of the tournament.<br><br>The Asian Men’s U23 Volleyball Championship is an international volleyball competition in Asia and Oceania contested by the under 23 men’s national teams of the members of Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC). This is the third edition of the tournament which was held for the first time in 2015. Iran, the winners of the 2015 and 2017 edition, will not be taking part in this edition. The hosts of the 2019 event are Myanmar, who also hosted the first ever edition of the tournament. The 9-day event will culminate on 11th August. All the matches will be held in the capital city of Nay Pyi Taw.<br><br>16 teams from Asia and Oceania have been divided into 4 Groups in the tournament. India have been placed in Group D alongside China, Thailand and New Zealand. After their match against China on the opening day, the team will face New Zealand next on the next day itself followed by a match against Thailand on 5th August.<br><br>The squad consists of Chirag, Gagan Kumar and Shon T John in the attacker’s position apart from captain Amit Gulia. Prince along with Shikhar Singh and Sonu Kumar Jakhar will be handling the blocker’s duties for the team. Muthusamy and Saqlain Tariq are the two setters in the squad while Hari Prasad is the sole Libero in the squad. The two Universals in the squad are Ashwin Raj and Himanshu Tyagi. Ten of the twelve players were part of the inaugural edition of the RuPay Pro Volleyball League held earlier this year.<br><br>The experienced Pritam Singh Chauhan is the coach accompanying the team.<br>This is only the second appearance of the Indian team in the tournament. Before this, the team participated in the inaugural edition of the tournament in 2015. The team then registered victories over Philippines and Qatar in the group stages but couldn’t make it to the Quarter-Final stage of the tournament.
